History of Tarot

Tarot cards were first invented in Italy in the 1430s. They began as a card game known as tarocchi, which included a standard four-suited deck augmented by a fifth suit of 21 specially illustrated cards called trionfi (meaning “triumphs”) and an additional card known as il matto (the Fool). The earliest known reference to tarot cards dates back to the 1440s, specifically in a document from Florence, Italy.
