History of Tarot

The history of tarot is rich and complex, tracing back to its origins in Europe during the mid-15th century.

Origins in Italy

Tarot cards were first invented in Italy in the 1430s. They began as a card game known as tarocchi, which included a standard four-suited deck augmented by a fifth suit of 21 specially illustrated cards called trionfi (meaning “triumphs”) and an additional card known as il matto (the Fool). The earliest known reference to tarot cards dates back to the 1440s, specifically in a document from Florence, Italy.

Evolution of Use

Initially, tarot cards were primarily used for gaming rather than divination. It wasn’t until the 18th century that tarot began to be associated with fortune-telling and the occult. This shift was largely influenced by French occultists who claimed mystical origins for the cards, often linking them to ancient Egyptian wisdom, despite no historical evidence supporting such claims.

Structure of Tarot Decks

A traditional tarot deck consists of two main sections:

  • Major Arcana: Comprising 22 cards that represent significant life themes and spiritual lessons.
  • Minor Arcana: Made up of 56 cards divided into four suits, similar to a standard playing card deck, which depict everyday events and experiences.

Modern Interpretations

Today, tarot is widely recognized not only as a tool for divination but also as a means of self-reflection and personal growth. The symbolism and imagery of tarot cards have evolved, with various artistic interpretations contributing to the diverse range of tarot decks available today.

While tarot cards originated as a game in Italy, their transformation into a tool for divination and self-exploration reflects a fascinating journey through history, influenced by cultural shifts and mystical interpretations.
